How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero Ohm. Therefore, i click here think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. 3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. 4. ECU
